Experience
Jim Margner has over 40 years of diversified international, federal and multi-state and local tax experience, with a specialization in multi-state and local tax consulting since 1995. He has worked for two Chicago-based Fortune 100 companies, national and regional accounting firms, and a large family office tax consulting firm of a multi-billionaire Chicago financier. He has extensive experience in multi-state, local income and sales/use tax for a wide variety of public and closely-held businesses including those engaged in manufacturing, distribution, software development, transportation, financial services, investment services (including broker/dealers), professional services, information services, leasing, interior design, printing, construction, real estate development, retail, advertising, REITs, healthcare, private equity, technology (including cloud computing issues) and energy production. Jim has successfully resolved many complex multi-state tax controversies, including appeals and litigation. He frequently consults on multi-state structuring and tax due diligence issues in the context of acquisitions and dispositions. In addition, Jim has performed many state nexus studies and voluntary disclosures. Jim is a frequent speaker at industry trade groups on the subject of multi-state taxation, has authored technical state tax articles for industry trade publications and has been published in The Tax Adviser. Education/Certifications Jim earned his B.S. from Western Kentucky University and an MBA from Indiana University Kelley Graduate School of Business. He is also a licensed and registered CPA in Illinois. |
